Do you know that, in the Philippines, around 90% of the businesses are SMEs? The 10% chunk of giant companies enjoy monopolies for sale of their products, most of which are products requiring high technological costs, such as appliances, mine products such as steel, paper and medicines. The large number of SMEs reflect the need for the Philippine government to take a serious look at the sorry state of our industries and upgrade these with new technologies--however government support for these industries is lacking and very much required. Take the example of China Today. Decades back Chinese industries were predominantly agricultural, similar to the present day Philippines, although they practiced communal production under State support and supervision. Take the look at South Korea also decades back. After the Korean War their government decided to support several highly industrial projects from the straddling agricultural set-up of that country then. Now, look at where these countries are in the world financial and industrial map: they produce cars, appliances, chemicals, aside from exporting food like Chinese apples and Korean pears to Southeast Asia. The lesson is this: The Phillipinnes requires a no nonsense program to develop its own industries and leap from the traditional norm of being a predominantly agriculture- producing country. I just hope Manny Villar will be able to address this problem if he succeeds in becoming President.
